What are the benefits of a Heritage Designation?

Environmental Benefits 

• Conservation of a heritage property is sustainable, uses less energy and has a smaller impact on our landfills than new construction. Conservation involves the recycling of materials.

Economic & Financial Benefits

• Research shows that heritage designation does not negatively affect property values. In fact, when there is a general downturn in property values, heritage buildings have been less affected.
• Heritage property owners may be eligible for grants, loans and other financial support to help with the conservation of designated heritage properties.
• Heritage designation contributes to local quality of life and economic development. Designation supports community renewal and cultural tourism.

• Heritage designation does not obligate an owner to restore a property to its original condition or an earlier historical appearance.

What are the benefits of a Heritage Conservation District?

Designating a district helps municipalities manage and guide change in the district. Each district has a plan with policies and guidelines for conservation, protection and enhancement of the area's special character. Once an area is designated as a heritage conservation district, any exterior alterations and new construction are required to be consistent with the district plan and the character of the area.
