Cobourg, ON (March 28, 2025) – The Town of Cobourg would like to advise residents that annual dredging operations of the Cobourg Harbour will be taking place during April and May.

The mechanical dredging involves removing accumulated sand and silt, which contributes to shallow water levels and hinders boat anchoring and navigation. Maintaining proper depths in the harbour ensures continued accessibility and functionality for boaters and other recreational users. This initiative is part of the Town's ongoing efforts to maintain the harbour’s function and safety.

Dredging operation will begin at the entry of the harbour to allow for the safe return of the Coast Guard. Additional dredging will be conducted, as required throughout the summer season to maintain depth. However, staff will work around the activities taking place along the waterfront.

Dewatering Sand on the Beach:
During April and May and early June, residents visiting the waterfront will notice piles of sand and holes in the beach where lake water can percolate out of the dredged sand before the sand is trucked off-site. Fencing may be installed to ensure public safety during these operations.

Dredging Operations
Since 2009, the Town of Cobourg hasowned and operated the Marie Dressler Dredge as a public service to Cobourg and beyond. In addition to servicing the harbour each year, the Town operates the dredge as a business venture, renting out services to maintain neighbouring municipalities harbours and waterways.This year, following the dredging of the Cobourg Harbour mouth, the dredge will be hauled away to complete a job for the month of May.

Residents along Third Street, Hibernia and Marissa Lane will notice the presence of the dredge supply trailer parked in the Marina parking lot. The dredge trailer will be parked in the Marina parking lot when dredge supplies are needed on site. When not in use, the trailer will be moved to the boat storage compound.
