Cobourg, ON (December 4, 2024) – As the holiday season approaches, the Cobourg Fire Department is reminding residents to prioritize fire safety when decorating their homes.

While holiday lights and decorations bring festive cheer, they can also pose potential fire hazards if not used responsibly. The Cobourg Fire Department responded to a call where a small set of Christmas lights caught fire. Fortunately, the fire was quickly extinguished, and no injuries were reported. This incident serves as an important reminder to practice fire safety when decorating for the holidays.

Holiday lights are a beautiful way to celebrate the season. However, improper use or use of damaged decorations can lead to dangerous situations. Here are some essential safety tips to keep in mind:

Holiday Lighting Safety

• Inspect Lights Before Use: Check holiday lights for damage such as frayed wires, broken sockets, or loose connections. Damaged lights can spark and cause fires.
• Look for ULC/CSA Certification: Use only lights and decorations that are certified by safety standards organizations such as ULC or CSA. These meet strict safety requirements.
