Cobourg, ON (April 3, 2024) – The Town of Cobourg would like to advise residents that flags across the municipality will be lowered to half-staff in honour of the passing of former Councillor, Robert Spooner
Robert (Bob) Spooner passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2024 at the age of 88. Bob was exceptionally devoted to his community, serving a total of 25 years over eight consecutive terms. During that time, he held positions of Councillor and Deputy Mayor. Bob spent a great deal of time investing in change for a better future. “Mr. Spooner dedicated his life to serving our community and demonstrated the unwavering courage to always do what was right for the majority,” Says Mayor, Lucas Cleveland. “As he once said, he voted on decisions for our community with the welfare of all Cobourg residents, not special interest groups, in mind. Mr. Spooner leaves behind a legacy of determination, integrity, and dedication to community.”
During his 25-year tenure on Cobourg Council, Bob was a part of Council decisions that were of tremendous benefit to residents and continue to shape community living today. These projects include the creation of Legion Fields, a celebrated softball facility, the purchase of Northam Industrial Park, which today is mortgage free and provides the Town with a source of non-tax revenue, and the Rotary Harbourfront Outdoor Rink offering free access to skating for our entire community. He also assisted in raising money for Pad 2 at the Cobourg Community Centre and community lights for Donegan Park and Legion Fields.
In addition to Municipal Council, Bob served his community as a School Board Trustee and served the sports community as a baseball Umpire and hockey Referee and Coach.
On behalf of Council and all staff, the Town of Cobourg would like to express our sincere condolences to Bob’s wife Beverley, their children Tammy, Robert and Brian, grandchildren, and their entire extended family.
