Cobourg Fire Department Visiting Downtown Residences for Fire Safety Education
Fire crews to go door-to-door to discuss home safety plans
Cobourg, ON (January 29, 2025)– The Town of Cobourg would like to advise residents that the Cobourg Fire Department will be conducting a fire safety education program starting Thursday, January 30, 2025.
The Cobourg Fire Department is committed to ensuring the safety of our community. Over the coming weeks, fire crews will be conducting door-to-door visits of the downtown core to promote fire safety and ensure working smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms are in place.
During these visits, firefighters will:
- Check that residences have functioning smoke and CO alarms, as required by law.
- Provide information on the importance of early detection to save lives.
- Share tips on creating and practicing a home escape plan.
“Working smoke and CO alarms, combined with a well-rehearsed escape plan, significantly increase your chances of survival in the event of a fire or emergency,” said Fire Chief, Ellard Beaven. “These visits are an opportunity for us to connect with residents, address any concerns, and provide valuable life-saving education.”
Under Ontario law, smoke alarms are required on every storey of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Carbon monoxide alarms are also required if your home has a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace, or attached garage.
Cobourg Fire Department encourages all residents to:
- Test smoke and CO alarms monthly.
- Replace alarms according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Develop a home escape plan with two ways out of every room and a designated meeting place.
